Located on the outskirts of Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park, near the villages of Bomassa and Bon-Coin, Wali Bai is a small 1.2-hectare clearing visited by a remarkable diversity of wildlife. To better understand how animals use the site during the construction of a new viewing platform, the park’s Tourism and Research teams set up a camera-trap monitoring system. The fires have permanently altered the landscape of Lac Télé.
In the Lac Télé Community Reserve, the scars of past fires remain visible in some areas of flooded forest. Some fires that occurred more than 15 years ago have left traces that are still clearly visible today. These fires, often caused by human activity, can gradually transform the landscape. Savannah can then replace the forest. And this change does not only affect the vegetation. This quarter was marked by the capacity building of 24 ecoguards from the PNNN and the PROGEPP Kabo, the monitoring of several wildlife mortalities, and awareness-raising activities with 443 people in 10 villages along the Haute-Motaba axis. The WHP also contributed to coordination and prevention mechanisms in response to health emergencies in the Congo and continued its research on zoonotic agents in the Ndoki-Likouala landscape.

Since May 2026, a female elephant accompanied by two young elephants – a juvenile and a calf – has been regularly visiting Mbeli Baï. Thanks to their identification records, our researchers were able to recognise this female as Af206, first identified in a photograph taken in 2013.
