Sharks and Rays Caught Before Reaching Sexual Maturity

At the Songolo landing site in Pointe-Noire, Republic of Congo, catch monitoring has shown that most sharks and rays are caught before reaching sexual maturity. These individuals have therefore not yet had the opportunity to reproduce, posing an important challenge for the renewal of their populations.

Catch monitoring has also helped document the diversity of sharks and rays found along the coast of the Republic of Congo. More than 106,000 individuals belonging to 44 species have been sampled, with 41% belonging to species classified as Critically Endangered.
