In the Lac Télé Community Reserve, the scars of past fires remain visible in some areas of flooded forest.
Some fires that occurred more than 15 years ago have left traces that are still clearly visible today. These fires, often caused by human activity, can gradually transform the landscape. Savannah can then replace the forest. And this change does not only affect the vegetation. It can also disrupt communities’ activities, particularly fishing, as well as the balance of biodiversity.
Preventing fires requires greater awareness and lasting changes in behavior. WCS works with communities through awareness and outreach efforts, supporting this process and encouraging practices that help reduce fire risks and protect the ecosystems on which people depend.
